PLACES TO VISIT

Gorges de Caranca
This stunning gorge can be found at the village of Thues entre Valls, 15 minutes west of Villefranche on the N116. Follow the signs to the car park and start the walk under the railway bridge.  After 500m you have a choice of routes, the best being to follow the signs for the Corniche and the Passerelles. Not for the faint hearted!

Port Vendres
A working port south of Collioure with a marina and great fish restaurants on the harbour side. Le France and Chez Pugol are two of our favourites.

Castlenou
One of the prettiest villages in France. Take the  D48 from Thuir and be sure to get a photo from the viewing point as you approach the village.

Bay of Paulilles

Follow the coast road, N114 past Collioure and Port Vendres in the direction of Banyuls sur Mer. The car park is well sign posted off a small roundabout. A visitor centre tells the history of Alfred Nobel’s dynamite factory and there is access to 3 beaches with coastal walks.

Collioure

The jewel of the Cote Vermeille. A visit at least once during your stay is a must. The picturesque streets are dotted with shops, restaurants and galleries but be aware it can get very busy in the summer, so parking spaces do become scarce. There is a park and ride and you can also access Collioure by boat from Argeles Port or Banyuls.

Argeles Port
Follow the D618 from Le Boulou towards the coast and then take the N114. There is a large marina and there are numerous restaurants overlooking the boats.

Villefranche de Conflent
A magnificent walled medieval village overlooked by Fort Liberia nestled at the foot of Canigou.  Take the N116 west from Perpignan. Can be combined with a visit to the Grande Canalettes.

Chateau Queribus
One of 5 Chateaus built by the Cathars. If you  are feeling fit climb to the top for the breathtaking views.  Take the D117 west from Perpignan.

Chateau Peyrepertuse
As above.

Argeles Plage
One of the main beaches of this region, lined with a palm tree promenade, with all the amenities of a seaside resort.  Park at southern end by Argeles Port. Outdoor photography exhibition through the summer.

Girona
Around 40 minutes from the house.  Take Junction 6 off the motorway and follow road into the city centre  for free car parking.  Cathedral, La Ramblas and more.

La Cite, Carcassone
Most visited place in France after the Eiffel Tower.  Used in the film of Robin Hood. Fantastic medieval walled city

Gorges de Galamus
West on the D117 from Perpignan to the village of St Paul de Fenouillet. Breathtaking narrow road through the gorge with viewing area and walk to the Hermitage de St Antoine. (Close to the Cathar Chateaus).
